Wetlands are no longer just a niche issue but are becoming a strategic priority for the country’s development.

In a recent column by Alejandra Stehr for the newspaper La Discusión, she highlights the key role these ecosystems play in water regulation, biodiversity, and resilience to climate change.

Beyond their ecological value, wetlands are natural infrastructure: they help mitigate extreme events, improve water quality, and sustain productive activities in the long term. However, their degradation continues to advance, often due to a lack of territorial planning and an integrated approach to watersheds.

The challenge, as she argues, is not just to protect them on paper, but to actively incorporate them into decision-making, understanding that their conservation is also an investment in water security and sustainable development.

Moving forward with nature-based solutions is no longer optional—it is a necessity!
