NaturaInvest participated in the international seminar “Public-Private Partnerships for Nature Conservation,” specifically in the session titled “Philanthropy and Mobilizing Funding for Nature Conservation,” where Rodrigo Arriagada, Ph.D., presented his insights on the role of academia in mobilizing funding for conservation.
During the presentation, a central challenge was addressed: biodiversity and natural capital continue to be excluded from many relevant financial decisions, which can result in misunderstood risks, misdirected investment, and still-incomplete public responses.
From this perspective, Rodrigo emphasized that academia plays a key role by providing evidence, legitimacy, and coordination among stakeholders, helping to identify priorities, design effective mechanisms, and strengthen collaboration between the government, philanthropy, and the private sector.
It was also emphasized that nature is already present in organizations’ balance sheets, even if it is not always measured: from water availability and the stability of soils and watersheds to the regulatory, reputational, operational, and financial risks associated with the loss of biodiversity and natural capital.
We extend special thanks to the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Service (SBAP), FAO, GEF, UNDP, and the UC Center for Public Policy for organizing this space for dialogue and collaboration, which is essential for advancing toward new partnerships that enable the financing, conservation, and restoration of nature.
