Hugo Benedetti, a researcher at NaturaInvest, recently participated in the Climate Finance & Sustainability Conference, organized by the John Molson Climate Business Institute at Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business, an event that brought together researchers specializing in climate finance and sustainability.

During the meeting, Benedetti presented the study “Machine Learning Climate-Implied Firm Outlook Index (ML-CIFO),” developed in collaboration with Mustafa Kocoglu, Ehsan Nikbakht, and Sai Manikant Palepu. The research proposes a machine-learning-based methodology to transform increasingly complex climate information into a signal that allows for a better understanding of companies’ future prospects.

The study combines information on observed local weather conditions—taking into account extreme events, persistence, and interactions among different variables—with climate-related disclosures made by the companies themselves. Based on this information, the authors develop an indicator that allows them to analyze how climate conditions and exposures may be related to corporate performance.

Among its key findings, the study identifies that a less favorable climate outlook is associated with lower operational performance and corporate valuation, lower levels of investment in research and development (R&D), greater volatility in stock market returns, and more pronounced adverse responses to major hurricane impacts.

These findings provide new evidence regarding the financial significance of climate risks and the potential of tools such as artificial intelligence and machine learning to integrate environmental information into business and financial analysis. In a landscape where companies face growing climate risks and greater data availability, these types of methodologies can help translate complex information into useful indicators for decision-making.

Hugo Benedetti’s participation in this conference also reflects the research conducted by NaturaInvest on the relationship between nature, climate, finance, and business decision-making, thereby strengthening academic exchange and the generation of applied knowledge in these areas.

El estudio se encuentra disponible a través de SSRN para quienes quieran conocer en mayor profundidad su metodología y resultados.
